Look through the first impression

Everyone knows this: you've taken some pictures, but they aren't as good as you hoped for. Don't worry about those photos, for there's more in it than just the first impression you get when you quickly browse through your pictures. When you go through the pictures for the first time, most of the times you'll look at them and judge them as if it were the final result. Sometimes you miss the real good ones because of that reason. When you shoot at RAW format there's a lot of information and quality which you can't directly see, but which is actually in the picture. You just have to get the quality out of it after you've seen the potential.
As most concertphotographers do, I used to really hate red lights. Cameras can't handle the situation that good and the red lights might ruin your perfect shot. Though, if you edit those pictures correctly, you can get stunning black and white pictures out of it. Sometimes you can, by adjusting the white balance, even get most of the colors back.
Another thing you have to look through is the composition. Sometimes you just have to crop the picture a bit to improve the quality of a picture. At first sight the picture might be boring. When you take another look at it and you crop it, you can make it more interesting.
I'll add some examples later, for now I hope this can help you a bit if you struggle making the right selection if you browse through your photos.

Old New Pictures: Epica @ Paard van Troje, 2008-10-16

It has been almost 4 years ago when Epica performed at Het Paard van Troje at The Hague. There was a show with a girl playing with fire which made the great evening complete.

Inspired by: Horst P Horst

Project for school, had to create an image inspired by the famous photo made by Horst P Horst (www.horstphorst.com) titled "mainbocher corset".
First of all I want to thank Hanna van Gorcum for being such a good model and Ivo Koot for assisting me in the studio. Thanks to both!

Personally I don't like to work in the studio. I prefer to work with just natural light, but of course, when necessary, I'll work with studio flash. And in case I have to work with studio light, I prefer to work with just 1 light and reflector to naturally lighten up the dark side.
I've put a big softbox on the right, behind the model and had it quite high. A reflector has been used with the white side, to have the reflection as low as possible with the result that I had in mind.

Shooting in the rain

A warm night, thunder and lightning in the background (too bad it wasn't closer and more powerful), lots of rain and a nice program on the television. Perfect moment to change clothes, grab the camera and go outside! I really like shooting in such circumstances.

Open Your Eyes (working title) (1)

It all started with a picture. Call it a lucky shot, call it inspiration, call it whatever you want to call it. There's more behind the picture than I knew when I shot it. There's more behind the girl than we can see in the picture, though the picture itself gives away some clues.
This project will be about Rebecca, a girl who's currently blind but whose vision has been there till her 19th. She knows the colors, the forms and when you describe things well, she can actually see it. The idea behind the project is to open the eyes of the ones who need it. To inspire people who are open to it. To give hope to those who despair. The result of it will be available as a book, though I still don't know how big and what price it will be. Doesn't matter for now, the project has just begun. I will keep you informed about the progress.
More news will be updated on this blog!

this shot was taken at the Elf Fantasy Fair and was the beginning of it all. How to find a girl without having a name and just having this picture? Besides.. Would a blind girl have facebook? Email? Found her within 26 hours after this picture has been taken. Love the world we live in!

Old pictures renewed: Epica

date: June 27, 2008
location: Burgerweeshuis Deventer (NL)
band: Epica
gear: Nikon D40 + 18-55VR

One of the first times I've shot pictures at a concert with a D-SLR. Actually, it was about the first time using such a camera. Had those pictures shot in RAW (thanks for that) and saved all of them. I'm very glad I didn't throw those pictures away! As I did with the Alter Bridge pictures (see: link) , I've made a new selection and edited the pictures to see what pictures could still be used.
